    Super Bowl Commercials XLV

    David Eichler

Everyone has an opinion on this, so here's mine:

    Best Campaign:

Volkswagen -- Darth Vader and New Beetle. Both were inspired.

    Best spot:

    Volkswagen -- Darth Vader.

    2nd Best Spot:
Bridgestone tires -- Reply all. Who hasn't been there?

    Funniest Campaign:
Pepsi Max -- Pretty boys getting whacked in the nuts and cutie getting pegged in head by angry girlfriend.

    Almost the Funniest Campaign:
Doritos -- Flying pug and bringing grandpa back to life were fun.  Call me old fashioned but guys licking each others fingers just doesn't make me want to snack.

Most effective use of $12 Million:

Chrysler - Imported from Detroit. Awesome. Has an advertiser ever taken the entire commercial break before?

    Most Controversial:

Groupon -- Tibet -- Some will say it was in poor taste, the rest of us have a sense of humor.

Most Refreshing Truck Commercial -- Ever
Chevy Silverado -- Tommy Fell Down a Well. Go figure, a truck commercial with a heart and a brain.

    Best Beer Spot:

Bud Light -- Dog sitting. A very weak year indeed.

    Best counter punch:

Verizon iPhone -- "I can hear you now" roars back with a whole new meaning.  Take that AT&T.

    Best Fox TV Show Promotion:
House parody of Mean Joe Green Coke commercial.

    Best stunt casting:
None. If you are counting on a washed up star to make your Super Bowl commercial, maybe you should consider babies or animals instead.

    Best Go Daddy Commercial:
    None. Enough Mr. Parsons.

    Creepiest:

Tie between Doritos -- guys licking guys fingers --- and Go Daddy -- Joan Rivers Full Frontal. Ewww.

    Biggest Evolution in campaigns:
Hyundai -- now using themes, effects and humor not just showing their cars on the road.

    Best nostalgia:
NFL --  showing Super Bowl’s depiction on TV over the years.

Most effective explanation of value proposition:
Cars.com -- try something first. So few commercials actually tell you why to use the product.

    Movie most likely to Bomb:

    Cowboys & Aliens

    Worst:
Pretty much everything that featured digital animation, lots of effects, dragons, high end prisons, old people or music stars.

    Seriously?

Chevy featuring real time Facebook updates as the reason to buy their car.
