Mother´s Day Showers Revenue on Retailers

Total dollars spent on cards for Mom will hit $682 million, according to the National Retail Federation´s (NRF) Mother´s Day-buying survey.
Even though the highest percentage of Mom´s Day shoppers plans to purchase a card, the most money will be spent taking Mom out to eat. The 46.3 percent of people planning a Mother´s Day dinner or brunch expect to spend $2.83 billion on dining out.
The next biggest chunk of money — $2.14 billion — will go for jewelry, with 19.7 percent of Mother´s Day consumers planning to spring for bling-bling.Right behind the shiny stuff comes flowers, with the 50.7 percent of folks who expect to say Happy Mother´s Day with flowers planning to spend $1.98 billion with florists and flower vendors.
Clothing and gift certificates will snag the next biggest chunks of Mother´s Day dollars, with the 23.3 percent of people planning to outfit Mom with new threads expecting to spend $1.27 billion and the 25.5 percent opting for gift certificates speculating that they´ll spend $1.26 billion.
Geez, what´s left? The spa, of course. Those people (9.7 percent) giving the mothers on their list a personal service such as a day at the spa, a facial or a massage will hand over $928 million.
Techo-Moms will be the recipients of $563 million in consumer electronics or computer-related accessories, with 6.4 percent of spenders planning to go the technology route. Bookworm Moms will receive $536 million worth of books and CDs from 28.5 percent of Mother´s Day buyers. Finally, 11.4 percent of shoppers will snap up $489 million in housewares or gardening tools.
Maybe your Mother´s Day shoppers will fall into the category the NRF marked "other," and if they do, that´s not bad because that 26.7 percent of Mother´s Day gift givers will spend $1.15 billion on, uh, whatever — maybe something in your store.
It´s enough to make retailers wish Mother´s Day happened every month. In fact, there´s probably a survey out there proving that most do.
