Pros and Cons of Producing Videos for Your Business

    Gabriel LeFrancois

The growing popularity of online video is undeniable, with the number of internet users viewing videos increasing every year. Every business owner should ask “Does my website need video?” Whether your site offers products or some type of service, implementing video can be a great way to show and explain the message you are trying to convey, but there are caveats.

Take a look at the following pros and cons of putting video on your website to help you determine if it is right for your business.

    Pros and cons of videos

    The pros

If your company does consulting and/or offers some kind of expert advice, a video can be a great way for consumers to really get a sense of a personalized visit. This is especially true if you read and answer customers’ questions or use them as topics for discussion. And if you produce the video with a well-written script and a clear and concise message, the video will give the audience a chance to see and get to know your company much better.

Does your company sell a product? If so, a video that demonstrates how it works, explains its benefits, and answers customer questions can end up being something your target audience will remember down the road.

In today’s fast-paced society, people are more likely to watch a video than read a long, drawn-out description or product overview. It’s also a great way to advertise and market your product because some of these videos wind up on the pages of YouTube and other viral video sites.

    The cons

It’s important to remember that thousands, if not millions, of people will be viewing your video, so the impression you make is widespread. And always keep in mind that once a video is placed on the internet, it could be there forever.

Something as simple as having poor production value can send the wrong message to the audience you’re trying to capture. It’s important that if you do decide to produce a video you have all your basics covered, such as camera, lighting, sound, editing, and so on. You don’t want your project to have the quality and look of a home video. Not only will it give the impression that you are an amateur, it will make your company and brand look cheap and your product undesirable.

It’s also important to note that production can become costly, especially if you think it’s something that will become a series. There are many great user-friendly video-editing tools out there, but applying them can suck up resources if you don’t know how to implement and use all the tools. Make sure this is something you have time to learn or is a task your employees can take on without diluting their other duties.

With all this in mind, producing a video for your website may just be that fresh something your business needs to boost traffic.
