Veils? Crosses? Pamphlets? What's Ok in the Workplace?
Physician Practice ran a provocative article last month on handling religious practices and beliefs in the workplace. The author noted that while this country guarantees freedom of religion, sometimes worker practices, displays, and utterances can make other workers (or patients) uncomfortable. How do you manage that issue in your practice? Does your staff talk about religion or spirituality during work hours? Do they display religious icons on their desk? It's a sticky issue, legally, and one well worth working through before someone does something to offend your employees or patients--or you get yourself into legal trouble by trying to control the behavior.
