Reflections from a Vacationing Mother in Business
You may wonder where I have been this past week. I’m on vacation, visiting family and trying to get some much needed R&R. Yet vacations are a funny thing now that I have two children and a company that I am trying to manage and run. This is what I have learned on this vacation.
Babies choose the oddest times to teeth, like when you are far away from home and not in your own bed.
Toddlers hate naps when they aren’t at home. Fight them even worse when they are expected to sleep on a blow up mattress in their grandparent’s bedroom.
No matter how many toys your relatives provide for your children when they come to visit, there are never enough.
Not many kids live in senior communities.
While you think that you will be resting and relaxing, the truth is you will be trying to get everyone to sleep all of the time, so much so that when it is finally time to sit down and rest and relax, you’ll have to go to bed.
Gone are the days of the midday cocktail by the pool, at least when you have small children that can’t swim but that think that they can.
Though you spent fifteen bucks on that novel you are dying to read, you aren’t going to read it on the plane with a baby in your lap and a toddler kicking the seat in front of you, and you aren’t going to read it when you get to your destination because, as I stated before, you’re going to be dealing with sleep issues.
Everyone’s gonna want to take you out to dinner because, well, that’s the fun thing to do on vacation, right? Well, that is when the kids are older, I suppose, and not when they are suffering from a three hour time change, no sleep, and heat exhaustion.
And yet, through all of this, I have also learned that little kids and big people can function on little to no sleep, blow up mattress are great bouncy toys, popsicles attract ants, you can still sip water from a hose without getting sick, loud restaurants are great with small children, you can read that novel in the bathroom, bare feet in sand feels good, and time goes much, much too quickly when you are having fun.
Hope you are all having a beautiful weekend.
