Pillows that Smell on Purpose
If you had to eliminate absolutely every single amenity that you found in your hotel room except for one, what would you keep? I’d keep the bed, but I’d certainly miss the internet connection, coffee maker, slippers, robe, Plasma TV, refrigerator, and my sandalwood pillow. “Sandalwood pillow?” you ask, “Yes, Sandalwood pillow.” I said.
What do water, duck down, eucalyptus, sandalwood, vetivert, and patchouli have in common? They’re types of pillows you can order from your swanky hotel’s “Pillow Menu!” Yes, “Pillow Menu!” The “W” and other ritzy hotels are now offering various neck and body pillows, stuffed with a variety of fillings, and scented with a variety of soothing, romantic, or even therapeutic aromas.
I’m definitely “old school” when it comes to this sort of thing and I’m sorry, but I just can’t stop laughing about this. It’s hard enough to check into my room now, “Sign here, fill out this form, what is your license plate number? What sort of Platinum gift would you like to receive? Do you want a high floor or low floor? Do you want a view of the park or the pool? Do you want internet service? What time do you eat breakfast?” And now they ask, “What sort of pillows do you want?” Seriously? “I’ll have the hypo-allergenic body pillow please, with duck-down stuffing and some ylang ylang scent. OH, and I’ll need a small water pillow upon which I intend to rest my feet while watching television.” I’m trying to picture Archie Bunker and his wife, Edith, checking into a hotel and the look on Archie’s face as he’s asked to choose a pillow…
If your hotel doesn’t have a pillow menu and you’re unhappy with the pillow you were issued (it happens), I suppose it never hurts to ask the front desk if they have alternates, as over time they’ve likely accumulated newer and better ones that haven’t yet found their way to your room. This, too, makes me wonder; Where do they keep all of those pillows? Is there a “Neck Pillow Room” and another room for body pillows? Do they stuff to order, or are there stacks of various down-filled pillows in various sizes, ready to be “scented” and carried up to the room? How does one wash or clean a hotel full of feather stuffed body pillows?
I’m patiently waiting to try one of these. If you’ve had an experience with a luxury pillow, please comment and tell us all about it!
