Definition for: Inter-Vivos Trust
An "inter vivos trust" is a trust that an individual establishes while he or she is alive, enabling the person to control the assets in the trust. Inter vivos trusts are often established for estate planning purposes. Inter vivos trusts are also referred to as "living trusts." These types of trusts are distinguished from testamentary trusts which are effective when the individual who established the trust dies.
