New Quiz on Emotional Intelligence
Though I tend to be slightly skeptical of emotional intelligence quizes -- unless they've been developed by academic researchers -- I thought I'd pass on this new quiz from Greater Good.
The non-profit, based at UC Berkeley, focuses on research into the science of social and emotional well being. This new quiz measures how well we "read" facial expressions, because our ability to recognize others' emotions is closely associated with our levels of compassion and empathy. And what I really liked about it was the fact that a) you get the answer with each question; and b) the answer deconstructs just how a particular facial expression conveys the emotion -- whether it's a slight contraction of a muscle or a slight tilt of the head.
They even talk about subtle differences between, say, the facial expression for disgust and that of anger (hint: it's partly in the wrinkled nose) and fear and surpise (next hint: it's an eyelid thing).
I got 16 out 20, by the way, which means I am "naturally well-attuned to others' emotions" but "still have room for growth." I believe my facial expression was one of interest and relief upon seeing my score.
