How to Keep Your Small Business Finances Organized

It takes an extraordinary amount of organization to start a business and keep it running smoothly. One of the most important (and overlooked) parts of that organization process is getting your business’s finances organized and in order. When setting up your “financial department” there are several things to keep in mind that will ensure that your business will run smoothly and efficiently and not waste productivity.

How to get your small business finances organized

    Bookkeeping

Keeping records of every dollar that gets spent and made is critical to the success of your business. But bookkeeping can be tedious, making it easy to want to find shortcuts and cheats to make it seem more efficient.

When it comes down to it, successful money management involves going line by line to make sure that every dollar spent and made is accounted for. As your business grows, having this process in place will make for smoother transitions and more automatic processes.

    Accounting

Especially when you are first starting out, it might not seem like a big deal to use your personal credit card for a business expense and vice versa. While it is convenient, it should not be a habit that you allow to happen frequently.

When it comes to accounting for your business, have a formal process in place that keeps track of your business finances separately from your personal spending. It can become more complicated than you anticipated, much quicker than you think.

    Credit cards

When setting up accounts for your company, figure out who will have access to them and whether you will have credits cards for each of those people. In addition, when choosing between your credit card options, take into considerations what expenses you foresee in the short and long term future to determine what type of card is best.

With the many rewards credit cards available today, it is tempting to choose one without knowing what the costs and fees are. But before you jump in, know what type of cards are available and what your main use will be. Especially if you have big costs coming up, looking for a low interest credit card which might help you out in the long run.

    Expense reports

It is important to have a process in place for accounting for the money flow in your business. Expense reports are the bane of everyone’s existence, but they are necessary. In addition to keeping track of expenses for tax purposes, it also helps you conduct internal audits from time to time to see where you are spending too much and where you can streamline certain areas in your business to its full operating potential.

    Benefits of organized finances

While it might seem like the tedious part of business ownership, having control over and being organized in your finances will greatly help your company to run smoothly and aid in its growth. Organized businesses are critical to success and without an efficient way to manage your finances, it will only make it difficult to manage your business as a whole.
