How To Market Your Business as an Introvert (and Still Attract Clients)

As an introvert, you have many valuable qualities, like being an excellent listener and being very present with the person in front of you, making them feel truly seen and heard. But, when it comes to marketing your services, you may not know where to start.

You already know what you don't want to do:

    • Pitch yourself live or do public speaking.
    • Create endless posts on social media.
    • Attend in-person networking events.

All those things scare you or, at the very least, make you pretty uncomfortable. You like to have a bit of control and don't want to share your entire life online or spend a lot of time in big groups of people because they drain you.

Embrace Your True Personality for More Effective Marketing

The good news is that you don't have to do any marketing that doesn't feel aligned with your personality. And the even better news is that using one of the strategies I'm about to discuss can be even more effective than the typical extrovert-friendly strategies.

The real benefit of using one of the following marketing strategies is that they build " SEO juice" or authority, which means they will help potential clients find your website online. These strategies are the foundation of content (or inbound) marketing, which relies on people interacting with search engines like Google to find content that helps them solve a specific issue they're facing.

When someone actively searches for a topic related to what you do, they are more likely to buy from you, making them a much more qualified lead. In fact, I know this is true from personal experience because when I audited where my own leads and clients came from, more than 90% came from search.

The Best Marketing Strategies for Introverts

    1. Blogging or Writing Guest Articles for Publications

The most introvert-friendly marketing strategy of them all is writing. Writing an article gives you complete control over the final product. You can take your time, rewrite each paragraph, and edit to your heart's content. And you can do this all while wearing cozy pajamas and sitting on a couch at home, drinking tea!

If you write a guest post, you'll likely be able to list your website or another link at the end of your blog so people can follow up with you. If you post on your own website, you're building a library of content that will help your ideal audience find you online.

If you focus on writing, you'll want to optimize your articles with free SEO tools and do some keyword research. (I use Yoast for this. It's a WordPress plugin.) This way, you'll ensure you're writing about topics people are actually searching for.

    2. Podcasting and Guest Podcasting

Podcasting is another great marketing strategy for introverts. If you have your own podcast and do solo episodes, you can record whenever you feel like it and in whatever setup makes you comfortable.

If you host guests, you can still do it on your own terms. For example, you can pick days of the week when you record and other days when you edit or are behind the scenes in your business. You can also create an audio-only podcast if you're uncomfortable filming episodes.

If you want to leave the recording, editing, and promotion work to someone else, you can guest on other people's podcasts. While you may have some hangups about talking publicly and sharing your story, the best way to overcome these is to practice on smaller shows and pitch yourself to larger audiences when you get more experience.

Podcasting also allows you to repeat yourself if you mess up and gives you some control, especially if you have your own show. It's much less scary than public speaking or going live on social media, where there's no redo option.

    3. Recording Videos for YouTube

Another great option for introverts is recording videos to upload to YouTube. You may think you need to be extroverted to create video content, but it's not always true.

As an introvert, you're likely to be more contemplative than your extroverted friends, which can be great when creating video content. This means you can dive into a topic and share a new perspective that others haven't thought of before.

Invest some time into learning about SEO so you can write great copy for your video descriptions and titles that people are searching for. YouTube is the world's second-largest search engine after Google, processing over 3 billion monthly searches, so it's another excellent way to get found online.

    4. Email Marketing

The final marketing strategy for introverts is email marketing. I included this strategy last because it's more of a supporting strategy and doesn't directly help with SEO. However, if you're not using social media as one of your marketing channels, you need a way to follow up with your audience and nurture them over time.

Once you get someone's attention from your other channels, you can add them to your email list through a freebie or lead magnet. They give you their email address in exchange for something of value, and then you follow up with them over time. This way, you can build trust and pitch your services.

Another benefit of email is that you can create most of your emails in advance and build an email sequence (also known as an email funnel) that nurtures your audience while you sleep. Ah, the beauty of automation!

Focus on Your Marketing Strengths as an Introvert

While marketing your business as an introvert may seem daunting, it doesn't have to be. You'll want to make sure you feel inspired by whatever platform you choose. That way, your marketing will feel more natural, and you'll get the best results possible.

And a final mindset tip: If you read through these marketing strategies and still doubt whether you could try one, that's normal. Even ambiverts (like myself) and extroverts must put effort into their marketing; it doesn't always feel easy. Take it one step at a time and understand that you can always switch to another strategy if it doesn't feel right.
