How Do I Register a Domain Name?
You register a domain name by going to a domain name registry, either one of the larger, well-known ones, like Network Solutions, Register.com, or GoDaddy.com, or to one of the many smaller domain name registrars, which you can find by performing a search for "register domain name" on Google or Yahoo!. You can find a list of approved domain name registrars at InterNic.com.
The registration process is usually described on the registrar’s home page. You will be asked to insert your chosen domain name (e.g., your name, name of your business), and then select a suffix or extension (.com, .net, .org., etc.). The registrar will then conduct a search of all currently registered domain names, including extensions, to determine whether your choice is available. If it is, you can proceed. If the name is not available, most registrars will suggest other similar names. If you really really want that particular name, you can attempt to purchase that name from the current domain name holder.
Provided the domain name you want to register is available, you then proceed to purchase the name from the registrar. After you have made your selections, you will be asked to make a payment by credit card, and then you are ready to go.
