Before hiring any attorney, it is important to contact the lawyer disciplinary agency in the state in which the attorney practices to confirm that the attorney is a member in good standing of his or her state bar. Most attorneys are licensed in one state only; some are licensed in many.
To find out whether an attorney has been disciplined, you must first determine the state or states in which an attorney is licensed, and then go to the website for the bar association for that state. The American Bar Association maintains an online listing of each state's lawyer disciplinary agency.
You can then search for that attorney’s name in the state bar’s record to see whether that attorney has been disciplined. Attorney discipline information is often also reported in print form, usually in the monthly magazine and/or newsletter mailed out by state bar organizations to their members.
