Definition of zone charges

postage charges applied to various classes of mail by the U.S. Postal Service based upon the weight of the mailing piece and the number of zones traveled from entry point to delivery. In Periodicals class, there are per piece charges applied to each mailing, in addition to zone charges. Periodicals mailers sometimes use drop shipping to truck mail across zones before entering the postal system to reduce zone charges.
