ultrahigh frequency (UHF)
bands of television channels from 14 to 83 on the television dial, operating at frequencies assigned by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 470 to 890 MHz ( megahertz). UHF channels were first assigned by the FCC in 1952 when 70 additional channels were authorized for increased television transmission. In 1965, a law was passed requiring all new television sets to be equipped to receive UHF programming. Today, there are 250 UHF stations in existence.
