tick mark
symbol, usually a check mark or asterisk, that the auditor places next to work completed on items being audited. work papers will have tick marks next to individual functions performed. Different tick marks can be used to signify different things. An explanation of the tick mark appears somewhere within the work papers. For instance, a certain mark may be placed beside the total of promotion and entertainment expense. The commentary to the mark may be something like "verified supporting documentation for promotion and entertainment expenditure."
