area, measured in square feet, of something for sale or rent. What is included in square footage can vary considerably; for instance, the square footage of an office in an office building may or may not include a common area adjacent to elevators.

the area, measured in square feet, of a piece of real estate. Generally measured from outside the exterior walls in the case of structures.
Example: The outside dimension of a rectangular home is 40 × 50 feet. Its square footage is 2,000.
