sit-down strike
form of protest involving stop-work tactics. It was first used by the CIO in 1936, when workers seized several General Motors plants in Flint, Michigan, beginning a 44-day sitdown strike. Sit-down strikes were determined to be illegal by the Supreme Court in 1939 and have since been largely abandoned as an organized labor tactic.
