To resize an object interactively with the mouse in most environments, select the object, and then drag one of the handles in the desired direction. Dragging a corner handle will keep the vertical and horizontal aspects of the object in the same proportion to each other (like reducing or enlarging something on a photocopier). Dragging one of the handles at the midpoint of the bounding box will affect only one dimension of the object. This way, you can stretch or shrink the object to the desired shape.
