- inexpensive publication featuring a collection of fictional stories. It derived its name from the low-grade, coarse paper that was initially used to economize on production costs. Pulp magazines are targeted to the mass market and usually feature one long story and several short ones about popular topics such as ambition, crime, and love. Although pulp magazines once boasted an impressive volume of advertisements, the magazines presently carry few advertisements and attain their revenues mainly from subscription and newsstand sales.
