primary audience
- targeted group for a specific advertising campaign. For example, the primary audience for new and improved diapers would be parents with babies. When an advertising strategy is being developed, the characteristics and buying habits of a primary audience must be evaluated carefully.
- targeted group for the editorial content of a publication. For example, the primary audience for an article on financial strategies would be investors. A publication will first identify its primary audience and then gear its editorial toward the wants and needs of this target group.
- total number of a publication's primary readers. For example, if one hundred individuals either subscribed to, read, or purchased a publication, this figure would represent its primary audience.
- individuals to whom, or places where, a publication is delivered or sold. For example, if one hundred copies of a publication are delivered among residences, newsstands, and libraries, this figure would be its primary audience.
