production beyond the production limits. Overruns can occur because of estimating errors, reduction in order size, or attempts to take advantage of excess materials.
excess production. Commercial printers typically produce a small percentage of material in excess of the quantity ordered. Part of the excess is a byproduct of machine set-up and calibration or may be printed to cover contingencies such as material damaged during printing or postpress processing. In most cases, the print buyer is charged only for the quantity ordered or for a maximum percentage of overrun agreed upon in advance of printing. Printed material such as magazines, catalogs, and newspapers are frequently printed in quantities greater than the expected distribution in order to cover unexpected contingencies, such as damaged or lost copies, requests for back issues, or distribution of copies as samples to prospective advertisers or buyers.
