order of magnitude
a factor-of-10 difference in size. If one number is 10 times larger than another, they differ by one order of magnitude. Personal computers have sped up by two orders of magnitude - that is, a factor of 100 - since the early days of the IBM PC.
More formally, the order of magnitude is the exponent in exponential notation.
