monitoring facility
equipment used to measure the extent of contamination, often in ground water.
Example: A monitoring facility (a well) was drilled at what was expected to be the fringe of a contaminated aquifer. Periodically, the facility was examined to determine the concentration of contamination in the aquifer, including seepage or leaching from a contaminated though encapsulated site.
