messenger
bank employee whose job is collection, by direct presentment, of checks, notes, and drafts that are not drawn on clearinghouse banks and thus are not collectible through a clearinghouse. Messengers also collect special items from brokerages and corporations, such as drafts with stocks or bonds attached. Collection by messenger is frequently known as collections by hand.
