Maximum Contamination Level (MCL)
under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the maximum allowable concentration of some contaminants in surface or groundwater to be used in the drinking water supply.
Example: To be approved as acceptable for drinking purposes, water must have less benzene than the MCL of x parts per billion, where x is set by the state regulatory commission.
