key disk
a non-copyable diskette that must be inserted into a computer in order to run a particular program. The key disk does not contain the whole program, only an essential part of it. Key disks are sometimes used so that a single licensed program can be installed on multiple machines but only used on one of them at a time. Compare dongle.
