Dictionary of Marketing Terms: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
not-for-profit agency created by the U.S. Commerce Department in 1998 to oversee the privatization of Internet domain name assignment. Part of ICANN's mandate was to eliminate Network Solutions, Inc.'s monopoly on registering .com, .net, and .org domains, as well as to determine how and when new top-level domains are created and how trademark and naming disputes can be resolved.
