a provision, in a computer program, for interaction with other programs that have yet to be written. For example, Adobe Photoshop and Netscape Navigator provide hooks for plug-ins that add additional features.

- in advertising copywriting, thing that catches the reader's, listener's, or viewer's attention. See also gimmick.
- giveaway offer made in broadcast, such as a radio program offer of a free record album to the next ten callers. In this context, the hook is used as a device to incite audience response in order to be able to approximate the size of the listening or viewing audience by the number of phone calls and the speed with which they are received immediately following the announcement.
- in retailing, free gift offered along with the purchase of a product (as an incentive to purchase).
- premium given away as a result of the hook.
