hit
- something successful. A product may be a hit with customers; an employee may make a hit with the boss.
- a visit to a web page. Many web sites have hit counters to keep track of the number of times a page is accessed.

- something found by a searching. For instance, if you search the Web for instances of the word "aardvark" and find 250 of them, you've found 250 hits.
- on the World Wide Web, an instance of someone elsewhere calling up the web page and viewing it. The popularity of a web site is measured in hits per day.

informally, a significant securities loss or a development having a major impact on corporate profits, such as a large write-off. Term is also used in the opposite sense to describe an investing success, similar to a "hit" in show business.
