hierarchical file system
- a file system that allows subdirectories or folders to belong to a higher-level subdirectory or folder (Figure 129). See directory.
- (capitalized, Hierarchical File System, abbreviated HFS) the file system of the Macintosh. Besides disk drives, HFS is sometimes used on CDs, rendering them unreadable on computers other than the Macintosh. Compare Joliet file system; Rock Ridge.
