Definition of gummed label

label that requires the application of moisture to activate the adhesive backing. Gummed labels are usually addressed by typewriting onto perforated label sheets. The sheets must be burst and applied by hand. They are therefore advisable only for extremely small mailings where speed of preparation is not a priority and costs must be kept to a minimum. Gummed labels are not used by largevolume mailers.
