Dictionary of Marketing Terms: grainy
grainy
- in audio, scratchy sound that is the result of inferior quality in either the recording or the playback equipment.
- in film, degree that the granules of silver (which make up the emulsion) appear in the print or on the screen. As a photograph is blown up to larger proportions, the granules become more obvious; the greater the enlargement, the greater the degree of graininess. Also, the faster the film speed is, whether in still photography or moving pictures, the more likely it is that the grain will be visible. See also film speed.
