Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms: Escape key
Escape key
a key on a computer keyboard that has a special meaning depending on what software is being used. In many programs and under Microsoft Windows, the Escape key means "get out of where you are now and get back to where you were before" (e.g., back out of a menu without making any of the choices on it). The Escape key transmits ASCII character code 27, which is a character originally used to send special messages to devices.
