Electronic Transfer Account (ETA)
bank account for electronic direct depositof Social Security and other federal payments to individuals. Intended for consumers without regular checking or savings accounts, electronic transfer accounts were authorized by the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996. Accounts became available to the public in 1999. Account holders can draw against deposited funds at automated teller machines or electronic point-ofsale terminals.
