Dictionary of Marketing Terms: disc jockey (DJ)
disc jockey (DJ)
radio show host whose program consists of the playing of recorded music interspersed with light conversation and commercials or announcements; called disc jockey. Disc jockeys usually feature a particular type of music, such as jazz, rock and roll, or easy listening, and throughout the years, different DJs have built up definite radio personalities specific to their particular brand of music-for example, Wolfman Jack and rock and roll music. With the advent of the discotheque and the video disk, the term has been widened to include anyone who plays popular recorded music for a group of listeners.
