computer-generated letter that appears to have been created especially for a particular reader. Fill-in letters are preprinted forms with blanks available for printing each recipient's name, address, and/or other information known about him. Another type of computer letter is created by printing concurrently on blank paper or letterhead the personalized information as well as the standard copy.
A type of computer-generated personalized letter draws paragraphs from a pool of paragraphs and combines them into a cohesive message while inserting information pertaining specifically to that customer. For example, the letter might have two paragraphs saying: "We have your complaint about not receiving the June issue and apologize for the inconvenience. Your subscription will be extended to August 2001 to adjust for the missed issue." In this example, the date of the missing issue and the new expiration date of the subscription were inserted into standard paragraph statements.
