removing an appropriate portion of a court bondto submit in order to collect (usually) semiannual interest; before the days of registered bond, bearer bond had such coupons attached. It is because of these coupons that a bond's interest payments are called coupons. In recent years, the expression has come to describe clipping newspaper or magazine couponsto obtain discounts. Whereas clipping coupons used to evoke a vision of a wealthy investor able to live on investment income alone, it now suggests the activity of a penny-pinching homemaker.
