until 1997 known as Public Securities Association, TBMA is a non-profit corporation headquartered in New York City representing securities firms and banks that underwrite, trade, and sell debt securities, both domestically and internationally. Debt securities include municipal bonds, Treasuries, agency securities, mortgage- and other asset-backed securities, corporate bonds, money market instruments, and repos. It has about 200 member and associate member firms and 20 affiliates. Some 90% of member firms are substantially owned by foreign institutions. The association advocates and lobbies for the bond industry, informs its members, conducts research, educates, and publishes. It was founded as the Investment Bankers Association of America (IBAA) in 1912.
