Dictionary of Marketing Terms: benday process (Ben Day)
benday process (Ben Day)
method of photoengraving that provides some variations in shading in a line cut, which is usually reproduced without shading. The process involves the use of special screens, plates, patterns, and the machine, all named after its inventor, Benjamin Day. It was used particularly in newsprint reproductions, to add variation to a one-color illustration. This process was at one time cost effective, but with today's advanced computer technology, it has become obsolete.
