Dictionary of Marketing Terms: backlighting
backlighting
production technique that lights a performer, object, or poster from behind rather than from above, below, or in front, in order to creat a dramatic effect. Backlit outdoor displays are becoming increasingly popular. Using an outdoor display concept that originated in Canada, words and pictures are reproduced on a sheet that has a filmlike texture. This sheet is then mounted in a special frame and lighted from behind 24 hours a day, creating a display with brilliant color and no shadow. In high-traffic-volume areas, these signs have great visibility, and they appear from the roadway as a giant 35mm slide.
