Dictionary of Business Terms: asynchronous
asynchronous
processes that are not synchronized. For example, most computer terminals use asynchronous data transmission, in which the terminal or the computer is free to transmit any number of characters at any time. (The bits constituting each character are transmitted at a fixed rate, but the pauses between characters can be of any duration.) Synchronous terminals, by contrast, transmit an entire screen full of information at once.
