4×, 8×, 16× ... 64× (etc.)
describing a CD or DVD drive, able to transfer data at 4, 8, 16 (etc.) times the speed of normal audio or video. For example, a 16× CD-R drive can record a full CD, equivalent to about an hour of audio, in about four minutes.
