Message : Hi Tony,
thanks for your informative articles on telemarketing.
We are currently looking to hire a hybrid of a telemarketer/sales person/business development professional.
In otherwords, we would like this person to come up with ideas and plans for lead generation programs, and also, follow up on those leads on an ongoing basis etc etc
Where do you think the best place to find a telemarketer w/ business experience would be. I have posted on craigs list, and not surprisingly haven't found anyone suitable.
If you know of a posting service on the internet that sales reps go to, I would apprecaite the recommendation.
Thanks!
Hi Lorna,
Thanks for reading my column and writing in. I'm always happy when I can offer readers advice they can use. To answer your question, good cold callers are few and far between because most only stay in the industry for about 5 years then get their degree and move on to higher paying jobs in their chosen field. Others are near or semi retired and don't want to stay in the market longer than they need to. Then you have people like myself who have been at this for 26 years but really don't take on cold calling accounts that much. Having said that, the real key is consistency, craigslist.org and other free ad Posting websites are a good start but you need to post almost weekly making it one of the most effective ways of finding people. In addition, try colleges, universites, retirement villages, community colleges for candidates. You can generally call the placement offices to determine if placing an ad on their bulletin board is allowed (most have one so be sure to call first). Let them know the benefits of you placing an ad which offers much needed employment to locals. Placing on the institutions' bulletin board is also free. Ask about career day while you have the school on the line.
It also occurred to me that since you want someone to go to the trade shows with you, it might not be a bad idea to change the title of the position to something like "Business Development or Sales Professional" making the focus more on developing business rather than telemarketing. I would also post under the heading of "Sales" as well as telemarketing, or business development all of which sound applicable to your needs.
If anyone else has any ideas,I would love to hear them!!!
Tony
