uniform standard for interindustry electronic interchange of business transactions. The X12 committee of the American National Standards Institute develops and fosters standards for electronic interchange of trade-related transactions, such as order placement and processing, invoicing, payments, and cash application data. The Data Interchange Standards Association, Inc. in Falls Church, Virginia, is secretariat for the X12 standards committee.
