role-playing game
a game in which the player pretends to be a fictional character. Although the most inclusive definition covers nearly all computer games, the term is usually used to mean a game in which users create their own characters. Role-playing games are designed to be played over a long period of time, during which the customized character increases in strength. MUDs, MOOs, and MMORPGs are all role-playing games.
