Dictionary of Marketing Terms: eight millimeter (8mm)
eight millimeter (8mm)
one of several sizes of motion picture film. (The other sizes are 16mm and 35mm.) Film size is determined by measuring the width of the film in millimeters. Eight-millimeter film is used primarily by amateur moviemakers for home movies. Some smaller stations and production studios use super 8mm as a low-cost alternative to 16mm. Although super 8 is exactly the same as that used by amateurs, the equipment used is more sophisticated, thus producing satisfactory results for broadcast. However, because of its size, 8mm film has less production flexibility in terms of splicing and editing.
