Work At Home Mommies: Get OUT and work sometimes!
I want to preface this post by stating emphatically that I LOVE LOVE LOVE working from home. The pros are incredible. I enjoy running my own business, I enjoy having the freedom to "skip´ work for a few hours to take my daughter to the park, I love having an office in the house so, on the days when I´m overly tired, I can just crawl from bed in my sweats and get to work. And, I have to admit, I love the fact that I don´t have to battle Southern California traffic on a daily basis-that just might put me over the edge all in itself!
However, there are drawbacks. The work can be isolating. I spend hours at a time in front of the computer, typing away, and even if the television is turned on I don´t hear the words. I can look up thinking I´ve been working for an hour and three have passed by.
But the hardest part is always working inside. I spend my days either with my daughter, and we got out and about a lot (probably to counterbalance the fact that my job always takes place in my home office) but when I am working, I am inside. Sitting at the computer. I do draw the blinds up and open the windows. I love the outside, the sounds of the birds and the sunshine and the breezes. But I am inside, and staring at the same scene day after day can be depressing after a while.
Today I am working form a local café. It´s 73 degrees outside, the sun is shining, and for the first time in a few days I feel refreshed. So I wanted to pass on this tip: Get out and work outside of your office from time to time. How can you do this, you ask? Here are simple ideas that you can use to get out and enjoy the fresh air, even if you are a work at home mom.
Schedule meetings that take place in restaurants. Yes, take your clients to lunch! They´ll appreciate the meal, and you may get more bang for your buck by treating them. Plus, you´ll get to get dressed, do you hair and, possibly, put on some makeup!
Hire a babysitter and spend a few hours a week working from another place, like a restaurant, the library, or a park. Yes, spend the money to do this. Believe me, you will feel a whole lot better if you have an opportunity to change the scenery a bit. Think about it: How often did you sit in your cubicle for the entire day without either stepping outside to eat, walk, or just walking around for some fresh air? And when you did work inside all day in an office, at least there were other people with whom to converse.
Set up working lunch dates with other work at home mom friends. If there are a group of you that live near each other, make a date once a month to get together, eat, and talk about the job (or personal things!) You can hire one or two babysitters to watch a group of kids at one of your houses, so that not everyone has to pay babysitter fees.
Look for a local group of moms that swap babysitting services, so that you take a child once a week or twice a month and someone watches yours the same amount of time. During the time that your child is at the other sitter´s home, get out and work. Find a local spot where you can rest, think, drink some coffee or have a snack, and move away form the walls of your home office.
Do you have more tips? Send them in and I will write about them in an upcoming post!
