I manage a company that publishes travel books. I’m hiring a freelance photographer to take some pictures for a new book on the Pacific Northwest. Do we have the right to reprint and reuse these pictures in our other books and materials, or do the pictures belong to the photographer?”
– Ahhhh, the craziness of copyright. Digital media has reinvigorated the copyright debate with technologies such as Peer-to-Peer and DRM. This doesn’t mean you don’t need to think about copyright law in your business but it can make it more confusing. Another way to attack the copyright issue is called ‘copyleft’ and you can read about it at Creative Commons. Copyleft allows a creator to release a work that does not have all of the rights reserved that copyright gives but is also not considered ‘Public Domain’. Why would you do this? To give yourself wider distribution if you are an unknown, to allow legal collaboration, to restrict your work to non-commercial use only and many more. -ed.
