Should you keep working when you start your business? It’s a tough decision. Check out the pointers here and you will know what to do:
Q. I am a big believer in starting something even if you are not truly ready (if you wait for things to be perfect you will never act or you will act to late.). Can you give some of your thoughts and feelings on starting a business on the side while staying employed? At what point would you say, “Hey, it’s time for me to do this full time!” or “Hey, this isn’t working.”? What are the indicators that you would use?
A. I never believe that there is a perfect time to start a business. If you are looking for justification, you can always find a reason not to “close your eyes and jump”. You need to ask yourself if you can be happy not starting your own business and instead keep working for someone else. If the answer is yes, then stay where you are. If the answer is no, then jump.
I think it is a good idea to try to spread your risk by starting a business while still employed. You can see if customers want to buy your product with less financial risk. But at some point, when you have proved the concept that customers want your product, you still need to make that big jump and quit your job if you want to grow your own business. I would ask myself at this point the same questions as I asked before: : “Can I be happy not starting my own business and instead keep working for someone else.” If the answer is yes, then stay where you are. If the answer is no, then jump.
– It is obvious here that your feelings of happiness should play into what you decide. Don’t do it because you will make more money (maybe!) do it for you.
