I was answering a question for an upcoming interview about why I blog. I’ve been thinking about what I said, so I thought I would expand on it here.
When I started blogging, my goals were mostly related to PR – to get more exposure for my work and book. I think a lot of people start this way and then the blogging bug bites them and they get what blogging is really all about. I don´t see the main purpose of my blog as a PR vehicle (this is now very minor, actually).
Blogging is my tuning fork.
I am forty something and the last of the baby boomers. But I want to remain fresh, relevant, provocative and yes, even hip. I want to have a sense for what people are thinking, what interests them, and the things that have fallen out of favor.
Blogging and reading blogs keeps my mind sharp and give me ideas that are more likely to work. For example, I don´t think I would have created the 2 Weeks 2 a Breakthrough Program and book proposal had I not been blogging. And I am very jazzed about this program.
What´s your tuning fork? We all need one. For a while there, Big Blue lost theirs.
Do you have a mechanism in place to ensure you are connected with your customers and in open and honest conversations with them? Do you have a way to know what´s gaining and falling in popularity? How do you know whether you are provoking or repelling your target market?
Having a reliable tuning fork is a gift and could be a huge advantage.
I blog to stay aligned with the opportunities in my field and to be a part of the business conversation.
This tuning fork keeps my mind young and active (but with eons of experience), which is the way I like it!
